Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1975, over 40 years.
What is your primary product or service?
Valley Design manufactures substrates, wafers, flat optics, and precision shims and spacers. Valley also provides precision lapping, polishing, dicing, CNC machining, grinding and hole drilling services. Materials processed include Glass, Fused Silica, Fused Quartz, Single Crystal Quartz, 96% Alumina and 99.6% Alumina, Aluminum Nitride, Sapphire, Metals and many others.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Valley Design was founded by Gunars Indars, who had an microelectronic engineering background. He worked for Raytheon, and later for Electronic Slicing & Dicing (ESD). During the recession of the mid-seventies, the company went bankrupt, and so Gunars decided to start his own business offering slicing services for various hard materials. Later, the company expanded to offer a wide variety of services, and developed unique processes to shape, planarize and polish many different materials.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
With over 100 different types of lapping, polishing and dicing machines in active operation, Valley is uniquely set up to process a wide variety of materials during any given day. Valley specializes in Ultra-thin (as thin as 10um), Ultra-flat (1/10 wave), Super Polishing to 1 Angstrom, Tight Tolerances (+/- .5um), and Tight TTV (.5um).
